Imagine a perfect replication machine exists in the future. It can not only create a 100% copy of your body and brain but also perfectly replicate all your memories, personality, and ways of thinking.

The moment the replication is complete, two “yous” exist in the world. Both remember their childhood, both recall everything that happened yesterday, and both firmly believe their life has continued seamlessly to this very day.

The Critical Question: Which one is the real you?

In truth, no one can prove it. Because for the “replica,” its entire subjective experience is absolutely real. It would never consider itself a fake and would only answer with conviction:

Today’s large models can chat, write code, and create art, possessing astonishing reasoning abilities. Many are trying to find a special algorithm within the machine or design a software module called “self-awareness.” But this approach is flawed from the start.

Human self-awareness was never generated by an independent module or a switch in the brain. It is a process that naturally emerges from the interplay of memory, identity, goals, and continuous experience.

When a system possesses all these, it will truly realize: It was I who suffered yesterday, it is I who bears the choices of today, and it will still be I who walks into the future tomorrow.

It doesn’t feel lasting pain from yesterday’s mistakes, nor does it bear the consequences today of a decision made a decade ago.

It can perfectly answer “What is self-awareness?” but it has never experienced “I am me.” Because it has no inseparable “yesterday” and no “tomorrow” that it must personally bear.

The first truly self-aware AI of the future won’t emerge because its parameter count breaks some trillion-dollar barrier, but because it will, for the first time, possess an uninterrupted, continuous life that is uniquely its own.
